HotBeads History
The debut of HotBeads at Mardi Gras 2000 forever changed the face of bead hungry crowds lined up along parade routes and Bourbon Street. The phenomenon of flashing lights spread even to Mardi Gras’ toughest critic—the locals. Natives are proud to state that they do not pay for Mardi Gras beads, rather, theirs drop from the heavens strewn from the floats of Orpheous or maybe Bacchus. However, many changed their tune with the introduction of HotBeads.
HotBeads, which can be seen at night from a distance of three city blocks, incorporate light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a technology commonly utilized in clock radios, electronic toys and automotive dashboards. The LEDs are housed within beads positioned around the bottom half of the necklace. Rendered in colored translucent plastic, these "hot" beads--think of them as mini strobe lights--are faceted to enhance the sparkling LEDs.
The circuitry, along with three replaceable watch batteries, is contained within a small, specially molded module that rests comfortably against the back of the neck. They have an on/off switch, and the replaceable batteries last for approximately 30 hours.
Mardi Gras is not the only market found ready to adopt the strobe light effect of HotBeads. The product popped up at San Antonio’s Fiesta, the GOP Convention in Philadelphia, on tour with Santana, the Super Bowl in Tampa, and Rodeo Houston.
What’s next? Well, the gang at HotBeads is not content to sit on their laurels. We are currently developing the next great lighted novelties for Mardi Gras and other parties. We'll keep you posted on the latest inventions here. The guys at HotBeads have many new products that will continue to redefine the word “novelty.”
Evolution of HotBeads
Mardi Gras beads have evolved from their inception to keep up with the times. Hand strung glass beads of the 50's evolved to flowered beads in the 60's, brighter, "disco" beads in the 70's and flashy metallic beads by the 90's. As with the rest of society, technology will inevitably become an integral part of everything we do, see, feel, and even wear. We believe that high-tech beads are the next evolution in Mardi Gras beads going into the next millennium. HotBeads was founded in response to the unsatisfied demand for innovative Mardi Gras necklaces for the New Orleans market.
